The 52nd annual Quesnel Ladies Best Ball Tournament was held at the Quesnel Golf Club this weekend (Aug. 16-18).

Twenty-six pairs from Quesnel, Williams Lake, Prince George, Mackenzie and Houston took part in the fun event.

The Low Net prize went to Lori Durocher and Shannon Coffey, who are both from Quesnel.

It was Coffey’s first time playing in a golf tournament, says tournament chair Kit Collins.

“We’re thinking she might be hooked,” jokes Collins.

“It was very impressive. She hasn’t played too much golf, but she’s a natural.”

Low Gross prize went to Cheryle Poulin and Anita Pendergast of Mackenzie and Prince George, respectively.

The two got the best combined score of the tournament to win the Nita Lane Trophy, which is named after the woman who won the low gross prize a whopping 17 times.

There were also prizes for deuce pots, meaning players who were able to finish a par-three hole in two strokes, as well as prizes for closest to the pin and longest drive and an unclaimed $50,000 prize for a hole-in-one on the seventh hole.

“Somebody rolled about a foot and a half away, so it was close,” says Collins.

All in all, the tournament was a success, Collins concedes.

“It was really smooth, really nice,” she says. “We rounded it off at 26 teams — so 52 gals — so it’s a comfortable-sized tournament to run.

“We get a lot of return ladies from Williams Lake and Prince George, and I think we grew in number for Quesnel ladies playing, which was really nice to see.

“We’re really trying hard to get the younger girls out enjoying our club to keep it alive.”

The event started off on Friday with practice rounds and a welcoming evening, and then the contestants played all day on Saturday before enjoying a banquet that night at the Billy Barker Casino Hotel showroom.

The ladies were back to the clubhouse on Sunday after another day of golf, at which point, they had a nice wind-up lunch where all the prizes were handed out.

Funds were raised for a few charities over the course of the tournament, as well.

After this weekend, $520 will go towards Palliative Care, $700 was raised for Canadian Tire Jumpstart, and $135 will go towards Quesnel Special Olympics.
