Fishing for salmon in Sooke is slow. This is due to change quickly as August arrives.
Some nice spring or chinook salmon are being landed but not many. There are some large pink salmon around as well. Most anglers target these fish with a pink squirt or hootchie, and some even use a red flasher.
The wind pattern in the Strait of Juan de Fuca has been calm most mornings, switching to stronger winds in the afternoons, making afternoon and evening fishing difficult.
The Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society Derby is coming up this weekend (Aug. 5 to 6) with a first prize of $5,000 and more cash prizes for second and third place fish. Proceeds from the derby fund the operation of the Sooke Jack Brooks hatchery.
Crabbing in the harbour has been good over the last week. Using chicken backs and necks in your traps will keep seals and otters away from your traps while crab fishing.
