Coho salmon fishing in Sooke is great right now, and now that we’re into October it will be even better.
Coho salmon in our area opened Oct. 1 to recreational fishers being able to keep one wild Coho salmon and up to three hatchery clipped fish per licence.
There are some winter chinook and still some late summer run chinooks around, but definitely the main focus is on the coho salmon now.
Coho can be targeted by trolling south until you are getting strikes then just repeat the process by running circles or trolling against the direction of the tide.
If you are getting into salmon in 250 feet of water then stay there and wait for the next school to come through. If not then look in another depth.
Bright pink hootchies on short 18-inch leaders have been working well trolled behind bright green or red flashers clipped 10 to 12 feet behind the downrigger ball.
