Clearwater Rotary’s 10th annual Ice Man Fishing Derby has been postponed, not cancelled, organizers report.
The derby has been re-scheduled and will be held Sunday, Feb. 13 at Dutch Lake, 9 a.m. to noon.
“It’s a family event. We get a few people from Barriere and Kamloops, but mostly it’s locals,” said Rotary spokesperson Tim Panko.
First place winner for the longest fish will take home $300. Second place is worth $200 while third will bring in $100.
“It’s the only local fishing derby and it helps that the fishing is fairly consistent on the lake … much better than in past years,” Panko noted.
Clearwater Hatchery staff will provide games, prizes and a variety of other on-ice activities for the youngsters.
There will be plenty of draw prizes at the derby plus on-ice food and refreshments will be for sale.
The derby was previously planned to be part of Clearwater’s Winter Carnival the weekend before last but was cancelled due to ice conditions.
Panko was optimistic the weather will remain cold but noted there are no guarantees.
Cost is $20 per person. Those under age 14 can enter free if accompanied by a paying adult, but are only eligible for youth prizes.
Tickets will be available on the ice on derby day or prior to the derby at Aspen Auto Parts, Super Save Gas and North Thompson Sports Fishing.
The money raised will be used for Rotary projects such its international student exchange, completion of Rotary Sports Park and improvements to the Dutch Lake dock and boat rental.
