Fishing spotting in Sooke

Halibut fishing slowed down a little for some this week due to faster tides.

Fishing has been spotty over the last week in Sooke, with some boats catching and some not.

There were some reports of a few nice salmon being caught west of Otter Point. Most boats are still catching springs right on the bottom in 120 to 160 feet of water with spoons or bait.

Island Outfitters “Just for the Halibut” derby winner Trevor Skakun weighed in a 72.1-pound halibut to take the $7,500 prize last weekend in Victoria.

Locally halibut fishing slowed down a little for some this week due to faster tides. Crabbing in the harbour has been much better with some great catches of large male Dungeness crabs using fresh baits.
