Vernon Minor Football Association started its first-ever flag football season Sunday in Kelowna with six teams of boys and girls ages 7-15 playing exhibition action at the Mission Sports Complex.

The season runs until mid June and teams will  then play in a 300-team open provincial tournament in Kelowna. Each team plays twice on game days and practices once a week.

“Flag football is a sport which is a great introduction to football for everybody to enjoy, said minor football president Ed Huber. “Having fun and getting in shape is the main focus.

“The field is only 30 yards wide and 60 yards long and there are five players from each team on the field at once. Flag football is a 100 per cent non-contact sport.”

Every offensive player on the field is eligible to catch the ball.

On opening day, the Magnums U10s White, the  U12 Blues and U16s all split their games, while the  U14 Magnums Blues and Whites went 0-4.

If you are interested in playing flag football this spring, e-mail Ed Huber at president@vernonfootball.ca as new players are still being accepted.
