The Ridge Meadows Flames are on top of the Harold Brittain Conference, thanks in part to a win by the Surrey Knights… finally!
At Cam Neely Arena on Friday night, the Maple Ridge Junior Bs battled the Grandview Steelers to 4-4 tie. They almost had the win, as Steeler Ian Prevost forced a 10-minute overtime period when he scored to tie the game at 19:47 of the third period.
The Flames received a goal each from Brendan Murphy, Andrew Strelezki, Ryan Wellburn and Liam Evenson.
The single point moved Ridge Meadows into first place in their conference, a point ahead of the Abbotsford Pilots, after the former first-place team suffered a massive upset in Abby – a loss to the Surrey Knights.
The Surrey entry into the Pacific Junior Hockey League hasn’t been in the cellar, it’s been buried under it.
It was the Knights’ first win of the season, and they went winless all of last year. Their goaltender Zakery Babin made 49 saves for a 2-0 shutout – the first of his career. He stole the win, as his team was outshot 49-12. Their record-breaking losing streak spanned three seasons and two full calendar years.
The Flames host the resurgent Knights in their next home game, on Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at Planet Ice.
