Nanoose Bay athlete Michael Mason has not reached the final round of the men’s high jump at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
The 34-year-old Ballenas Secondary graduate finished seventh in the group B qualifier on July 29.
The former Ballenas star athlete did not clear the 2.28 metres qualifying height. The highest he achieved was 2.25 metres.
Prior to the Olympics, Mason jumped a season-high 2.30 metres at the Harry Jerome Track Classic last June. He has a personal best of 2.33 metres.
Another former Ballenas graduate, Kai Langerfeld, and his partner Conlin McCabe just just missed out on the bronze medal in the pairs rowing on July 29.
The duo put on a thrilling performance as they made a late surge in the race but just fell short to finish in fourth place, 0.55 seconds behind eventual bronze medal winners Denmark.
This was Langerfeld’s second Olympics having competed at the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Games, where he helped the coxless four team finish sixth.
Langerfeld, who now resides in Victoria, followed the rowing career of his father, York, a former national and Olympic rower at the 1976 Montreal Games.

Meanwhile, another Ballenas alumni, Alycia Butterworth, will make her Olympic debut when she competes in the women’s 3,000-metre steeplechase heat on Aug. 1.
