Groenendijk sisters team up with undefeated Mariners

Two of Vancouver Island University’s women’s sports teams are undefeated in league play so far this season, and Duncan Christian School graduates are playing big parts in the Mariners’ success.

The VIU women’s volleyball team, which features DCS alumnae and sisters Danielle and Megan Groenendijk, are 16-0 record in league play, having won 48 of 51 matches.

Megan graduated from DCS in 2012 and has returned to VIU this season to play out her fourth year of eligibility alongside her younger sister. Danielle graduated from DCS in 2017 and is in her second year with VIU, having been named a tournament all-star when VIU won the national championship last spring.

This past fall, Danielle spoke to more than 250 athletes at the single-A girls volleyball provincial championships in Nanaimo, sharing her story of hard work, dedication and commitment to the DCS Chargers and the VIU Mariners.

Another Groenendijk sibling, brother Doug, plays for the VIU men’s volleyball team along with fellow DCS grad Adam Kapteyn.

The VIU women’s basketball team, which includes DCS grad Juliet King, won their first seven league games this season before losing to Capilano University on Saturday. King started her post-secondary career at Trinity Western before transferring back to Vancouver Island prior to the 2017-18 season.
