Former Langley Chiefs sniper Derek Grant will forego his final two years of NCAA eligibility after signing with the Ottawa Senators on Thursday.

Abbotsford hockey prospect Derek Grant signed his first pro contract on Thursday, agreeing to a three-year entry level deal with the Ottawa

Senators.

In signing the deal, Grant is foregoing his final two years of eligibility with the NCAA’s Michigan State Spartans. He has joined

the Binghamton Senators, Ottawa’s AHL affiliate.

“This was not an easy decision, but it is the one I felt that was right for me,” Grant said in a press release. “I love everything about Michigan State, and I

will always be a Spartan.”

Grant, who played junior B hockey with the Abbotsford Pilots and junior A with the Langley Chiefs, was the Senators’ fourth-round pick (119th overall) in the 2008 NHL entry draft.

The sophomore forward was the Spartans’ leading scorer in 2010-11, netting eight goals and a team-best 25 assists for 33 points in 38 games.
