Former South Surrey jockey 18th at Kentucky Derby

Mario Gutierrez fails to make it three victories in as many attempts at Churchill Downs

The third time wasn’t the charm for former South Surrey jockey Mario Gutierrez last weekend, as the two-time Kentucky Derby winner wasn’t able to win a third.

Riding horse Irap, the 30-year-old Gutierrez – who lived in South Surrey while racing at Hastings Park for horse-owner Glen Todd – finished 18th out of a 20-rider field Saturday at the Churchill Downs race.

It was Gutierrez’s third time competing at the Derby, but his time outside of the winner’s circle. In his previous two races – in 2012 aboard I’ll Have Another and last year, riding Nyqvist – he placed first. Saturday’s Kentucky Derby – which was said to be the most wide-open derby in years, with no clear favourite – was won by Always Dreaming.
