Camps planned across Fraser Valley for players and coaches

A half-day lacrosse camp is being hosted at Chawathil First Nation in February, and registration is free.

The camp is being hosted by Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity & Recreation Council – Fraser Region and is specifically to introduce Indigenous youth (First Nations, Inuit, Métis) to the fast-pace game.

This camp is open to youth ages six to 13 who want to learn the basics of lacrosse, or expand on lacrosse skills. The camp will be facilitated by NCCP certified coach Adam Smith, and run from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28.

It’s just one of several free sports camps taking place for Indigenous youth across the Fraser Valley in the coming months.

There will also be an eight-week ringette camp hosted by Skwah First Nation in Chilliwack, held on Feb. 4, 11, 18, 25, and March 3, 10, and 17. It will be held at the Sardis Sports Complex on Tyson Road.

There are also coaching workshops, again for free, for anyone of Indigenous ancestry, or anyone who works with the Indigenous community in a sports position or in recreation.

The next coaching session is on March 8 in Chilliwack at Tzeachten First Nation, and title Indigenous Communities: Active for Life. Pre-registration is required.

Other camps coming up include Rifle Shooting with Fraser Valley Metis Association (Feb 3, 10, 24) in Abbotsford, archery with Fraser Valley Metis Association (Feb. 4, 11, 18) in Abbotsford, Basketball with Opus Prep Academy (Feb. 5, 12, 19, 26) in Abbotsford, and camps in Surrey, Langley and Delta.
