Miz Josie was there, as were Big Nose Bob, Whiskers, Steamer G. Hawger and other members of the Rope Burn City Bounty Collectors gang along with some friends.
They gathered at the Quesnel Rod and Gun Club for the First Annual Surprisin’ Smith Smokewagon Memorial Shoot, to honour the memory of Mike Standbridge.
Stanbridge, a former member of the RCMP Auxiliary and a Civil War ball and cap revolver enthusiast, was the founder of the Cowboy Action Shoot at the Quesnel Rod and Gun Club.
The format for the action shoot, first held in July 2000, involves competitors loading up two revolvers, a rifle and a shotgun and each is used to fire at specific targets in a specific order, explained Mike (Steamer J. Hawgar) Taylor.
The revolvers were restricted to cap and ball with black powder, plenty of black powder.
The day featured four different scenarios, each with a little bit of acting and a whole lot of gun smoke. For each scenario competitors are timed, with time penalties assessed for missed targets and shooting targets in the wrong order, Taylor explained.
Match Winner and Top Gun was Chicken Marengo (aka Roy Teed).
Second Gentleman Pistoleer was Steamer G. Hawger (aka Mike Taylor) and Third Gentleman Pistoleer was Cunningham Kid (aka Steve Lemke).
Miz Josie took the First Lady Pistoleer honours and Bloody Bill Anderson (aka Stephen Anderson) took the Young Pistoleer honour.
Miz Josie also won the coveted Spirit of the Game award for her unflagging enthusiasm, love of the sport and period costuming.
