He may be an import from another league, but forward Connor Beauchemin with the Golden Rockets is no stranger to the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League.
The 18-year-old was acquired early in November, and has averaged almost a point per game since he’s been here.
“I just came up, I think in early November, from a team in North Delta,” said Beauchemin. “I wasn’t that surprised though. I’ve played in this league before, last year in Columbia Valley.”
The right-winger is trying to make himself a force to be reckoned with on the team by using his speed and skill.
“I like to be a fast skating, kind of hard on the forecheck, power forward type of player,” said Beauchemin. “I always liked players like Jerome Iginla and Matts Sundin. I love how Jerome Iginla plays. He does everything, scores, fights, hits, anything they need him to do.”
Beauchemin has been groomed to be a hockey player since a very young age.
“I’ve been playing hockey since I was about two,” he said. “I learned how to skate before I could walk.”
His father is also no stranger to junior hockey.
“My dad was going to play hockey in the WHL, but then he cut his leg open, so he couldn’t play anymore,” said Beauchemin.
Although he has a couple more years where he is eligible in the KIJHL, Beauchemin is hoping to make some changes next year.
“I’d like to move up to junior A next year if possible, or maybe get a scholarship. Maybe I could go play in America somewhere,” he said. “I want to do something in business and sales.”
