The Nakusp Falcons had a great weekend. On Friday night, Nakusp Minor hockey put a float in the “Light Up Parade” which most players rode along on or walked beside. They took home the first place ribbon.
The Falcons Atoms team hosted Boundary to a Saturday noon hour game which they were bound and determined to win so they can head into the Christmas break with a 5 and 5 record. They seemed to have no problem in doing so. The final score was 9-3 for Nakusp, with seven of those goals being scored by Dakota Fizzard and the other two by Evan Fehler and Thomas Steenholff.
On Saturday, the Falcons played host to the Castlegar Jr. Rebels. The first period saw end to end, fast paced hockey but both goalies would not allow any pucks in. Castlegar went up 2-0 early in the second period and the score remained 2-0 at the break.
During the break, our newest hockey players the Jr. Falcons, had their hockey debut. They played a 10 minute game and the score was a tie at the buzzer. Following the initiation game, the netting was raised and Nakusp Minor Hockey spectators participated in the second annual Teddy Bear/Toy Toss. All toys were donated to the Nakusp Community Services Holiday Hamper Program.
After the long break, both teams hit the ice to finish the second half of the game. Castlegar lead 3-0 early in the third period. Devon Coates got the Falcons on the scoreboard at the 15 minute mark of the third, unassisted, but the Rebels matched that right up. The Falcons would not give up and the coach decided to shuffle the lines up a bit to get something happening. Winger Aidan Hascarl won a battle in the corner, came up with the puck and put his first ever career goal in the net. Coates would follow that right up with his second of the game. With only one minute left in the game, Falcons pulled the goalie and put a sixth attacker on the ice to try and tie the game. Falcons could not put the puck in the net and the game remained 4-3 for the Rebels.
