The Cowichan Farm Store Fury mounted a late comeback to defeat the Juan de Fuca Bombers 2-1 in an intense Vancouver Island Soccer League Div. 3A showdown at Royal Bay Secondary School in Colwood on Sunday night.
The host Bombers opened the scoring just 12 minutes into the match, and held on to their marginal lead until the 80th minute, when some strong pressure by Herman Parmar caused a turnover that led to Ole Mackay’s team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Two minutes later, Elvis Asengi floated in a corner kick that Antony Van Cleave headed past the JDF goalkeeper for the game-winning goal.
“They were the more creative and inspired team,” Cowichan captain Pat Foley commented. “But we saw it through and came away with it a lot like the game we played there last year.”
Cowichan keeper Tim Den Hartigh stood on his head to get the win, conceding only one remarkable goal.
Rising in the Div. 3A standings with seven points in their last four matches, the Fury have a bye this weekend before visiting Campbell River on Nov. 9.
