Comox Valley rink ties for third in round robin the loses tie-breaker

The Sandra Gallaway rink finished fourth at the BC Master Women’s Curling Championship, held March 5-9 at the Creston Curling Club.

The Comox Valley Curling Centre rink (skip Gallaway, third Liz Ellis, second Mary Ellen Werner and lead Elaine Starchuk) finished with a 4-4 record.

On March 5, Gallaway lost 7-5 to Carol McFadden (Royal City) and 8-5 to Lorraine Jeffries (Alberni Valley). On March 6 Gallaway beat Trudy Bentley (Quesnel) 9-6 and lost 7-5 to Cherie Baker (Creston).

On March 7 Gallaway defeated Marge Obee (Nanaimo) 10-5. On March 8 Gallaway wrapped up round robin play by beating Isobel Gardner (Royal City) 9-7 and Karen Lepine (Langley) 6-3 to set up a tie-breaker with Lepine, which the Comox Valley quartet lost 6-4.

McFadden went through round robin play undefeated, winning a bye to Sunday’s final. Jeffries finished with a 5-2 record, while  Gallaway and Lepine were tied for third place with 4-3 records.

A 6-4 tiebreaker win for Lepine, skipped by 2013 seniors and masters champion Karen Lepine, moved them on to the semifinals. But the Langley rink was unable to get past Jeffries as the Port Alberni team scored a deuce in the eighth end to wrap up the game 8-7.

Jeffries met McFadden in the final and scored a deuce in the second and a three-ender in the sixth on their way to a 7-3 victory. Jeffries will head to Coaldale, Alta. from March 31 to April 6 for the 2014 Canadian Masters Curling Championships.
