Gators lead Langley charge at BC championships

Walnut Grove junior girls, Mountain junior boys win respective banners at provincial high school track and field championships

Led by the Walnut Grove Gators, Langley high school athletes won 15 gold, 12 silver and 10 bronze medals at the B.C. high school track and field championships.

The three-day competition was held June 2 to 4 at Nanaimo’s Rotary Bowl stadium.

The Gators captured 17 of the 38 medals won by Langley athletes and the Walnut Grove junior girls won the team title for their age group with 50 points. The Gators were also third overall in the combined junior division with 57 points.

The R.E. Mountain Eagles won the junior boys titles with 52 points while Credo Christian was sixth with 27 points.

Walnut Grove

Bob Nicol (Grade 8 boys) led the way with a trio of gold medals, taking top spot in the long jump (5.40m), 100m hurdles (15.66) and 200m hurdles (28.91).

Three other Walnut Grove athletes won two medals apiece.

Holly Harrison (Grade 8 girls) won gold in the 200m hurdles (30.61) and silver in the long jump (5.03m) while Prabasha Wickramaarachchi (Grade 8 girls) was second in the 200m hurdles (30.67) and third in the long jump (4.99m).

And Natalia Monro (junior girls) won silver in the 80m hurdles (11.78) and bronze in the long jump (5.33m).

Alex Savage (senior boys) won gold in the long jump, leaping 6.65m.

Cam Calbick (Grade 8 boys) won silver in the 200m hurdles (29.41) and Cassidy Cardle (junior girls) won silver in the 1500m race walk.

And Paul Smit (Grade 8 boys) won bronze in the javelin (38.49m) and Shaunika Suriya (Grade 8 girls) won bronze in the high jump 1.45m.

The Gators Grade 8 girls and junior girls also won a pair of silver medals in the 4×100 relay events, finishing in 52.78 and 51.19, respectively, while the Grade 8 girls also took bronze in the 4×400 relay with a time of 4:22.88.

Katie Laface, Wickramaarachchi, Kyra Mclean and Harrison were on the Grade 8 4×100 team while Jessica Wisotzki, Jordan Jacobs, Samantha Matthewman and Monro were the junior girls 4×100 squad.

And the Grade 8 girls 4×400 team consisted of Laface, Shaunika Suriya, Kelsey Stelnicki and Harrison.

Mountain

Zach Wyatt (junior boys) led the way with gold in both the 3000m and 1500m steeplechase events. He won the former in 9:28.11 and the latter in 4:22.93.

In fact, the Eagles trio of Wyatt, Jordan Schmidt and Tate Wyatt, swept the podium in the 1500m steeplechase, and all three runners also bettered the previous provincial mark in the event. 

Schmidt won silver in the 4:25.74 while Tate Wyatt won bronze in 4:27.35.

Schmidt also won gold in the 800m with a time of 1:59.33.

And the trio combined with Xavier Soh to take top spot in the 4×400 relay, finishing in 3:32.61

Langley Christian

Kiana Bekar (senior girls) won gold in the triple jump (11.60m) and silver in the long jump (5.52m) while Brooke Mussche (junior girls) won gold in the 800m (2:15.37) and silver in the 400m (58.56).

Leah Bakker (Grade 8 girls) took bronze in the 800m (2:28.76).

Langley Secondary

Kevin Hughes (junior boys) won gold in the 200m (23.11) and silver in the 100m (11.45) while Dean Ellenwood (senior boys) won gold in the 800m (1:55.90).

Langley Fundamental

Megan Champoux (senior girls) won silver in the 400m hurdles and Tanika Dolfo (senior girls) won bronze in the hammer throw (47.69m).

Yorkson Creek

Felix Allen (Grade 8 boys) won silver in the 800m (2:16.36) and bronze in the 400m (56.22).

Brookswood

Jaclyn Pauley (senior girls) won gold in the javelin with a throw of 41.54m.

D.W. Poppy

Ethan Foster (junior boys) won gold in the pole vault, setting a new provincial record at 3.70m

Credo Christian

Ian Vandergugten (junior boys) won bronze in the100m hurdles with a time of 14.37.
