It was an eventful weekend of high school basketball for the Walnut Grove Gators and the Brookswood Bobcats.
The Gators senior boys continued their early-season success, winning their second tournament in as many tries.
Walnut Grove, the top-ranked 4A team in the province, defeated the Kelowna Owls 83-62 in the championship final of the Tsumura Basketball Invitational on Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.
The Gators won their four games by an average of 26 points and are now 9-0 on the season entering this week.
The Walnut Grove senior girls team brought home a silver medal from the Quinn Keast No Regrets Tournament. It wrapped up on Saturday in West Vancouver with the Gators dropping a 68-57 decision to the Charles Best Blue Devils.
The Gators defeated South Kamloops 76-67 in the opener and Carson Graham 69-59 in the semifinals. Walnut Grove’s Tavia Rowell and Jessica Wisotzki were named all-stars.
Walnut Grove is ranked seventh among 3A senior girls teams in the province.
And the Brookswood Bobcats junior and senior girls were competing at the Victoria Christmas Tournament over the weekend.
The senior ’Cats, ranked second in the province for 3A teams, lost 57-52 to top-ranked Oak Bay in the championship final. They defeated Panorama Ridge 78-68, Churchill 79-42, and Heritage Woods 93-47 in their earlier games.
And the junior Bobcats placed fourth after a pair of close losses in the semifinals and bronze medal games. Brookswood fell 53-53 to Royal Bay and 54-46 to Riverside. They had defeated Lord Byng 71-43 and Seycove 43-41 in the earlier games.
There were no all-stars handed out at the tournament.
