Gord Closson Forest Products did all their scoring in the first two innings on their way to a 4-3 win over Wheatsheaf in a Nanaimo Senior Men’s Fastball League game at Glenora’s Waldon Park on Tuesday evening.
“One-run games are the best part of the game,” GCFP manager Joe DiLalla said.
GCFP jumped on Wheatsheaf in the first two innings, scoring three runs in the first and one in the second, then coasted to victory.
The team did its hitting by committee, as six players recorded one knock apiece. Craig Snyder launched a home run in the second inning after scoring in the first on a double by Trevor Gicas. Dan Whiteford also hit an RBI double and was hit by a pitch. Ryan Kline went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Chris Kline and Steve Lingren were also 1-for-3.
Snyder was outstanding on the mound once again, giving up seven hits while striking out 15 Wheatsheaf batters.
The GCFP players have demonstrated their versatility this season, switching positions from game to game.
“It’s kind of fun,” DiLalla said. “They’re all young and capable of playing wherever they want.”
GCFP will host the 2016 Vancouver Island Club Championship at Waldon Park this Saturday and Sunday. Seven teams will take part: all four teams from the Nanaimo league, as well as one squad each from Sooke, Victoria and Saanich.
GCFP plays on Saturday at 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., and on Sunday at 11 a.m. The semifinals will take place Sunday at 1 p.m. followed by the finals at 3 p.m.
The team will resume the NSMFL season at home against Baker Supply next Tuesday at 7 p.m.
