Genesis Boxing and Fitness is holding its fourth charity sparring event at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 21.
“This will be an in-house sparing event of our club members,” said Rick Rae of Genesis Boxing and Fitness.
It will be a great chance for the friends, family and supporters of their members as well as the general public and those interested in boxing to see the kind of work the club is doing, Rae said.
They are currently in an intense six-week training regime to gear up for some key tournaments this winter and Rae said the sparring event is a great chance to try out the stuff they have been learning.
“These events are new for some of the kids and this is their first chance to get in front of a crowd,” he said.
“We have some of our old boxers back, and we have a strong, small team at this point that we know will represent our community well,” Rae said.
“Our workouts at this point are extremely intense and we are doing extra sparring on some Saturdays, depending upon the young boxer’s schedules.”
With entry by donation (suggested $20) the event will also be a fundraiser for the local food bank, SPCA and multiple sclerosis sufferers, with representatives of each on site.
They will also be accepting non-perishable food at the door and Rae stressed the money and food will strictly go to the local groups, not to some distant foundation.
A portion of the funds will also go to help cover travel costs for the club to travel to many events over the next few months, including the Road to Glory Tournament 2013 in Victoria and the B.C. Boxing Silver Gloves in Richmond.
“We have many more events that we will be entering before January 2014.”
“This is a big deal for us and a big deal for community and our chosen charities. We will also have some special things happen in the event, such as pad work with Kenyon Shaw who has been with our club in our special needs training for over two years.”
He said the sparring event will show that their program “is much, much, more than just boxing, it’s life skills.”
