Try Girls Hockey was back at Oceanside Place on the weekend.

What they lacked in skill they more then made up for in enthusiasm, and the energy on the ice certainly had to be encouraging.

“We had a great turnout,” she said. “Our best yet.”

Oceanside Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) female coordinator Sue Street was all smiles Saturday afternoon as a bumper crop of game young girls wobbled around the ice for an introduction to the coolest game on earth through the Regional District of Nanaimo’s latest Try Girls Hockey clinic.

“There were a total of 25 new female skaters on the ice that ranged in age from five years old to 14 years old,” Sue said of the free introduction, pointing out there were three coaches overseeing the 90 minute clinic — Mike Squire, Mark Carter, and Aaron Bishop — which included a number of OMHA’s ‘veteran’ girls out to help out with gear and on-ice activities.

“It was a fantastic day and everyone had a great time,” Street said.

“We look forward to seeing many of the participants in the fall and will hold another Try Female Hockey event in early September,” she continued, and had extra props to arena programmer Val McNutt, “for her unwavering enthusiasm and encouragement of the Try Girls Hockey program, and the Regional District of Nanaimo for the youth grant that made the day’s events possible.”

“Look at all those young faces out there … it’s great,” Val beamed from behind the glass.
