To say the weather for Glacier Greens Saturday Men’s annual Devils Scramble was ugly would be an understatement.
Ninety-five signed up and 92 showed up on Oct. 1. Threatening skies greeted the participants as they teed it up for the annual fall wrap, affectionately know as the Devils Scramble. It is a team event with six holes best ball, six holes scramble and six holes of the dreaded dice game.
“After two holes of play the rain started and did not stop till we were finished and heading to the warm clubhouse,” said Saturday Men’s co-ordinator Len Doyle. “If this had been an individual play tournament I think many would have bailed, myself included. But being a team event and not wanting to let the team down, all 92 players stayed out there till the last putt had dropped.”
This year’s winning team at -11 was Jeff Edwards, Dave Wacowich, Paul Arsenault and Hugh Scoullar. Next at -10 winning a count-back was Jim Livingstone, Guy Tremblay, Rick Verbeek, Wayne Wood and Greg Conway. Also at -10 was head professional Bill Kelly, Burt Graham, Mike Pollock, Wally Berger and Ron Peacock.
At -9 winning a count-back was Darrell Fieber, Ken Grant, Len Doyle and Glen Meeres. Rounding out the top five also at -9 was Stan Mills, Willie Oliver, Rob Egan, Roy Collings and Dave Buckley-Jones.
Following play all participants were treated to a fine lunch prepared by our own Ben Gill and his staff and each visited a well-stocked prize table. Team KPs were available on all five par threes thanks to our sponsors.

Jan Edwards and Ellie Nicholas from the Glacier Greens Ladies Club held a fundraising draw. They sold all 100 squares on a draw board and the squares were eliminated one by one till only one remained. Wally Berger is now the proud owner of a brand new Ping putter.
A special thank you to club member Lee Johnson who once again painted, framed and donated a print to the Memorial Bridge fundraiser. Also thanks to Bill Kelly who donated a Sun Mountain golf bag to the same cause.
“My committee and I thank all the Saturday Men’s players for their continued support and a special thank you to our head professional Bill Kelly and his staff for their assistance every Saturday morning,” Doyle said.
“Safe travels and good health to our many Saturday morning players that head south for the winter. For those that stay behind and weather permitting we will continue our Saturday Morning competitions.”
