The Nanaimo Buccaneers built a 3-1 first period lead over the Comox Valley Glacier Kings on just nine shots.
But the Bucs didn’t stop there. They added two more in the second period to open a 5-2 lead en route to a 6-3 Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League victory Feb. 4 in Nanaimo.
Marcus Gloss started in goal for the Icemen but was pulled in favour of Braddock Otton at 2:10 of the second period after Nanaimo had upped their lead to 4-1.
The Bucs out-shot the Yetis 34-28, with Alex Orth earning the win in the Nanaimo net. Comox Valley went 1-for-5 while Nanaimo was 3-for-7.
Curtis Csuk, Brandon McReynolds and Liam Nijhoff tallied for the Yetis while Jake Calverley, Jordan Levesque, DJ Petruzzelli, Chad Bell, Billy Walters and Mitch Popp accounted for the Bucs’ scoring.
The Glacier Kings return to action Saturday, Feb. 6 when they host the Campbell River Storm in a 7:30 p.m. start at the Comox Valley Sports Centre Arena #1. The Storm blows back into Courtenay on Monday, Feb. 8 for a 3 p.m. matinee on Family Day.
The G-Kings close out the regular season at home, with games Feb. 13 against Nanaimo and Feb. 20 against Saanich Braves.
ICE CHIPS The Yetis are third in the North Division with a 17-23-0-4 record … there are two G-Kings in the top 10 of league scoring: Grayden McInnes is seventh with 50 points (20g, 30a) while McReynolds is eighth with 49 points (21g, 28a) … the Storm are battling the Victoria Cougars for the Andy Hebenton Trophy … Victoria has finished the regular season with the most points the past five years …
