The Comox Valley Glacier Kings picked up four big points in Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League action last week, defeating the Nanaimo Buccaneers 4-2 Jan. 21 in Nanaimo and downing the Kerry Park Islanders 7-1 on Jan. 23 in Courtenay.
At the Comox Valley Sports Centre on Saturday, Kyle Wade’s four-point (1g, 3a) performance sparked the Yetis to a lopsided win over the Islanders. Ty Madden added three assists as seven different G-Kings lit the lamp. Curtis Csuk, Grayden McInnes, Liam Nijhoff, Austin McNeil, Justin Mirabelli and Affiliate Player Tristan Sailor had the other Comox Valley goals.
Marcus Gloss made 25 saves to earn third star honours and the win. Caleb Franklin ruined the shutout bid midway through the second stanza. The Glacier Kings unloaded 39 shots at Ty Rennie en route to period leads of 2-0 and 3-1.
Gloss was busier Jan. 21 in Nanaimo, kicking out 32 shots and earning third star honours in the G-Kings’ 4-2 win.
Sheldon Brett scored twice and added an assist to secure first star honours. Nick Novin and Wade netted the other Yetis’ goals. The visitors built a 2-0 lead only to have the Bucs battle back and pull even early in the third.
Brett’s second of the game at 19:00 put the Icemen back in front, and Novin added an empty-netter with 16 clicks left on the clock. Nanaimo out-shot the G-Kings 33-20.
The Yetis wrap up the January portion of their regular season this weekend with a game Friday in Campbell River against the Storm and Saturday at home against the Oceanside Generals (7:30 p.m. SC#1).
