The first-ever Campbell River Select hockey game was a great success Dec. 17.

The Selects defeated the travelling Nanaimo Eagles 14-13 at Rod Brind’Amour Arena. The last goal was scored in the final seconds of the game to put Campbell River ahead by one.

It was a rollicking undertaking with the score remaining relatively even for the whole game. The players showed their enthusiasm and skill throughout.

Both teams had assistance from a few players from the Campbell River Storm. The Storm have great fans in the Select team and were happy to provide some game strategy to both teams.

Goals for Nanaimo were scored by: Sash Barbour, Matt Caljoul, Bill Polz, Jacob Park, Jack Cairns and Rick Brownbridge.

Goals for Campbell River were scored by: Tyson Hrynuik, Chris Lee, Dawson Williamson, Matthew Basso, Alex Crete and Jacob Gillis.

Goalie Nicholas Benner of the Campbell River Selects is responsible for getting this team started. He suggested to the management at Strathcona Gardens that it would be a great idea to have a team for players with developmental challenges.

Both teams celebrated with a pizza party after the game.

The Selects were appreciative of their friends on the Nanaimo Eagles and their families for travelling to Campbell River.
