Golden rockets lose two on weekend road trip

It was a tough weekend for the Golden Rockets who lost both games they played away from home.

The Sicamous Eagles proved to be too much for the Golden Rockets during Kootenay International Junior Hockey League action on Friday night.

The scoring started early in the game, when Golden’s Carson George scored, unassisted, in the opening minutes of the first period. The teams traded goals from Sicamous’s Parker Bowles, Golden’s Connor Beauchemin, and Sicamous’s Brendan Devries.

With two minutes left in the first, the Eagles took the lead for the first time in the game when Connor Flynn buried the puck behind goaltender Jarrod Schamerhorn.

The scoring dried up in the second. Despite three power play opportunities (two for Golden and one for Sicamous), the middle frame was scoreless.

The third period progressed much the same way, until the Rockets pulled Schamerhorn for the man advantage. Bowles scored an empty-netter, putting a final nail in the coffin, with 37 seconds left in the game.

The game ended 4-2 in favour of the Eagles.

The Rockets travelled West for their next game in Revelstoke, to play the Grizzlies for the second time this season.

The game started off shaky for the Rockets, and they gave up a goal early in the first. But a power play opportunity tied the game up when Brad Orr scored, with the assist going to Riley Henderson.

Golden took the lead in the dying minutes of the period, when Beauchemin scored his second goal in as many games.

The momentum shifted in the middle frame, and Revelstoke took back the lead with three unanswered goals. The Grizzlies continued to dominate in the third period, scoring two more by the midway mark.

Rockets Captain Darren Andre fought back, scoring an unassisted goal, but it was not enough to bring his team back into the game. The Grizzlies scored their final goal of the night with a minute to go for a 7-3 victory.

Goaltender Cole Henson was awarded 3rd Star of the game for his 42-save showing.

The Rockets will be played their final home game of 2011 against the Fernie Ghostriders on Tuesday Dec. 20. Go to www.thegoldenstar.net for results.
