Golden Rockets pick up four points during final week of regular season play

The Rockets picked up two wins in three games on the road this past weekend.

A three-game road trip turned out some impressive results as the Golden Rockets went 2 and 1 for the weekend.

They started the trip off with a 4-1 win over the Spokane Braves on Friday Feb. 10.

After a scoreless first period, the Rockets took the lead in the second when Keith Wake scored off of Captain Darren Andre. They strengthened their lead on the penalty kill with a short-handed goal from Kyle Garcia.

Golden tallied another short-handed goal in the third, this time it came unassisted from Jacob Bergeron at 8:26.

Spokane managed to get on the scoreboard with a goal from Dylan Tappe. But Andre restored the three-goal lead on the power play with just over a minute left on the clock.

They had a tougher night on Saturday when they took on the top team in the KIJHL, the Beaver Valley Nitehawks.

The Nitehawks struck first with a goal from Jacob Boyczuk. The Rockets answered back two and a half minutes later when Bergeron scored off of Dallas Flockhart and Lane Erickson.

That would be Golden’s only goal of the game, while Beaver Valley racked up five more. The final score was 6-1 for the Nitehawks.

The following afternoon they travelled to Nelson to play the Leafs. This time the Rockets came out on top with a 5-2 win.

Nelson scored first, but it didn’t last long as Andre tied it up on the power play. The Rockets dominated the scoring in the second period, putting three up on the scoreboard from Garcia, Wake, and Bergeron.

There were two more goals scored in the third, the first from Nelson’s Patrick Martens, and the second, less than a minute later from Golden’s Lyndon McBryan.

Golden defenceman Shane Rutherford added a little extra excitement to the final period when he was tossed from the game for fighting.

The Rockets have one final game left in the regular season in Creston Valley on Saturday Feb. 18. The playoffs will start the following weekend on Friday Feb. 24.
