“Prince Rupert?”
“You have got to be joking.”
“But it’s so far.”
These are just some of the comments that the Golden bantam boys hockey team are hearing all over Golden these days. Rex Baxendale, Braxton Guilliford, Brayden Mastrioanni, Lukas Pfisterer, and Evan Tsadilas are all playing hockey for the Columbia Valley Rockies this year, and the team has made it to the Tier Four Provincial Championships being held in Prince Rupert from March 16 to 21.
These five boys have been playing hockey together for more than eight years for Golden Minor Hockey, but when there were not enough players to create a team here in Golden they decided to join the team in Invermere. The team has a 20-15-3 record so far this year and are travelling to Kimberley this upcoming weekend for the East Kootenay Championships.
It has been a really big commitment for both the boys and the parents to play down south, but one that is worth it. Especially when they get an opportunity like this to be a part of the Provincial Championships. In order to get to Prince Rupert, the team has been doing a variety of fundraisers up and down the Columbia Valley. Golden businesses have been incredibly supportive and have made donations that will definitely help the team get to this tournament.
The last fundraiser is a spaghetti dinner on Wednesday, February 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Turning Point Restaurant. Everyone is welcome to come out and support these boys in their hockey dreams. The boys will be serving dinner and there will be a 50/50 draw as well. Those who can’t make it to the dinner can still drop donations off at the Turning Point Restaurant with Megan Tsadilas.
