The Mid-Island Women’s Amateur golf tournament is inviting golfers to swing their sticks on Route 66.
The 66th tournament will be held this weekend (June 6-7) at the Nanaimo Golf Club.
“The calibre of the competition will be as good as it’s ever been,” said Heather Lindsay-Lecuyer, tournament chairwoman. “We have a number of past champions coming.
Last year’s champ, Jackie Little, is back to defend her title, and one of Nanaimo’s local hopefuls is teen Shirin Anjarwalla.
“It’s nice to meet all the ladies and compete with them. There’s some really good golfers all over the Island,” Anjarwalla said. “I get to watch these women play really good golf and it helps my game to see how good their etiquette is, how good their game is, and just how poised and wise they are.”
Saturday’s round starts at 1:30 p.m. and Sunday’s action begins at 8:30 a.m.
The top hole-in-one prize is a brand-new Cadillac courtesy of Laird Wheaton, and there are other prizes and a banquet in addition to the golf.
“There is a real camaraderie and friendship among the women golfers from the Lower Mainland and on the Island,” said Linsday-Lecuyer.
