Adam Hadwin is in the PGA record books.
The Abbotsford-raised professional golfer – whose official website lists South Surrey’s Morgan Creek Golf Course as his home course – became just the ninth golfer in tour history to shoot a sub-60 round when he carded a 13-under-par 59 Saturday at the CareerBuilder Challenge in La Quinta, Calif.
The tour record is 58, held by Jim Furyk, and eighth others including the 29-year-old Hadwin have shot 59. Hadwin is now the only Canadian to ever shoot a 59 in the PGA.
Hadwin led the field by one stroke after Saturday’s round, and ended the four-round tournament in second place, one stroke back of American Hudson Strafford, whose final-round score of 67 was enough to vault him to the top of the leaderboard.
“It was just kind of an average week until yesterday, really. To go out and do what I did and put myself in the position to win a golf tournament… it just sets up the year and puts a lot of pressure on the rest of the year now,” Hadwin said in a PGA Tour news release issued over the weekend.
“It’s just a lot of positive momentum moving forward and confidence that I can compete out here.”
The second-place finish was Hadwin’s best-ever on the PGA circuit. He has two top-10 finishes.
