Two local Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS) basketball players received good news this past week.
Ryan MacKinnon was selected to the CanadaWest All-Star Team, leading his Victoria Vikes in scoring, assists, steals and minutes played. The Vikes were eliminated from post-season play, losing the third game in a best-of-three series in Edmonton.
Meanwhile, Calvin Westbrook helped lead his Trinity Western Spartans to a berth in the CIS national men’s basketball championships in Halifax as they defeated University of Alberta to capture third place in CanadaWest and the wildcard berth for nationals.
Trinity lost a heartbreaking 80-78 semifinal game to defending national champs Saskatchewan but rebounded to defeat Alberta for the bronze medal and nationals berth.
Westbrook scored 11 and 12 points in the two games. UBC and Saskatchewan join Trinity Western in the eight-team nationals, which start tonight.
