Quamichan School’s track and field team had an outstanding performance at the Island championships in Victoria on May 15 and 16, including a second-place overall finish for the Grade 8 boys team.
Thoran Koyote set the pace for the Quamichan boys, placing first in high jump, third in long jump and fourth in the 200m, with top-eight results scoring points for the team.
Also coming home with first-place finishes were Nico Harris in shot put and Owen Reilly in javelin. Harris added a fifth-place result in high jump. Evan Mayer was second in discus and javelin and third in triple jump and Dillon Wilson finished second in shot put. Reilly and Mayer are in Kelowna for the provincial championships this Thursday through Saturday.
Quamichan’s girls team finished seventh in the team rankings. Chelsea Wright had the top individual results, placing second in the 400m and fourth in the 200m. Nina Lionas placed fourth in javelin and sixth in discus, Samantha Kostamo was sixth in shot put and eighth in javelin, Sasha McQueen placed sixth in high jump and Kayla Dosen placed sixth in the 100m.
Frances Kelsey, meanwhile, finished just two spots back in the boys team standings, largely on the strength of a phenomenal meet for runner Miles Powell. Powell finished first in the 800m and 1500m, and second in the 3000m. Also from Kelsey, Levi Peters was fourth in shot put and fifth in high jump, and Kaiden Lewis placed sixth in discus.
Duncan Christian School brought home a pair of silver medals as Danielle Doherty placed second in the Grade 8 girls 3000m and Cohen Floucault was second in the Grade 8 boys triple jump. Doherty also finished fifth in the 1500m, and Floucault was fifth in shot put and seventh in long jump. Rounding out the DCS results, Dara De Vries finished seventh in the girls 100m.
Ella Descoteau claimed a pair of silver medals for Brentwood College School, in the girls 200m and long jump.
Joaquim Dalton-Pereira of Queen of Angels brought home bronze in the boys 400m and placed seventh in the 200m.
From Queen Margaret’s School, Amber Ince was fifth in long jump and sixth in triple jump, and Aniela Hagen placed seventh in both the 800m and triple jump.
Lake Cowichan School’s Elise Nelson finished seventh in the Grade 8 girls 1500m.
