This weekend, over 100 BMX racers and their families will descend upon the BMX track in City Park for the Grand Forks BMX Club’s annual Provincial Championship Race weekend.
There will be races on Friday evening (from 6 p.m.), Saturday (from 11 a.m., all proceeds from this race going to BC Children’s Hospital) and Sunday (from 10 a.m.).
Come cheer for our local kids and adults, as they race with the riders from all over the province.
“Most of the visiting racers come from the Okanagan Clubs,” says Grand Forks BMX Club President, Dave Carlyle, “They love our track because of its excellent design and length. The Grand Forks BMX track is known to be the longest BMX track in the province, so our racers, who train on it regularly, have developed great endurance. “
“BMX racing is popular the world over, and is also an Olympic sport, so we are really lucky to have such a great track right here in our little town,” Carlyle says, “And the visiting racer families love our Provincial Championship Race weekend because they can camp adjacent to the track, and have easy access to all the stores and restaurants that Grand Forks has to offer.
“There is no doubt that hosting an event of this size has a positive economic impact on our community,” Carlyle adds, “It is a great opportunity for the City of Grand Forks to showcase its natural beauty and easy lifestyle to a captive audience”.
The Grand Forks BMX Club is run by parent and community volunteers and all proceeds from the concession stand, next to the track, pays for track operating costs.
“Emcon has been very generous to the BMX Club every year,” says Carlyle, “We are very thankful to Ken and Holly and the folks at Emcon, who have donated their time to keep the track in great shape.”
In addition to the BMX Provincial Championship Race Weekend this weekend, The Grand Forks Road Cycling Club will be holding its Cycling BC Masters Race weekend in Grand Forks on Friday evening and Saturday and Sunday.
This promised to be a big tourism weekend for Grand Forks, with lost of opportunities to watch some great athletes in action.
