Groups close in on turf field fundraising goal

Community and soccer associations apply to Aviva Community Fund, but still need help

If you had a chance, and it only cost you a few minutes of your time, would you help bring $100,000 to Sooke?  Not only can you help, so can your friends and family here and around the world.

The Sooke Community Association and Sooke Soccer Club have joined forces to make the dream of an all-weather turf field a reality.  Their application through the Aviva Community Fund is open for voting until Oct. 28.

Aviva has made voting easier this year you can log in once here and cast all 18 of your votes for the project.

In previous years voters had to log in daily to vote. Anyone with an email account can vote.

“We feel we have a very good chance of success with this application,” says Laura Lockhart, president of the Sooke Soccer Club

“Voting counts for 15 per cent of the criteria and we would like to receive the full 15 per cent. We feel we have defended our goals by addressing the other criteria of longevity, sustainability, impact on the community, the likelihood of success, originality and quality of our application.”

The soccer club and community association already have much of the funding in place, as well as commitments for major support in the way of expertise, materials, equipment and volunteer labour.

The field is being designed to serve soccer, football, lacrosse, rugby, field hockey and baseball.

Project management, site work and other tasks will be largely done by volunteers and in-kind support, though the turf field will be professionally installed.

The turf field will be located at Fred Milne Park.
