GW Graham field hockey squad wins AA Fraser Valley tournament

The Grizz beat three overmatched opponents by a combined score of 20-0, qualifying for provincials.

GW Graham’s varsity field-hockey squad is off to AA provincials after a dominant performance in the Fraser Valley tournament.

The Grizz went 3-0 with a combined 20 goals for and zero goals against.

This after an undefeated regular season.

GW Graham opened Valleys against Agassiz, grinding out a 6-0 win against a tough defensive team with good goaltending. Kennedy Campbell and Megan Lane had two goals apiece with Hannah Rachey and Kelly Spriggs scoring singles.

Midfielders Rachey, Deanna Tuchscherer, Aliza Dueck and Taylor Nicholson had to draw the defense apart and move the ball quickly to create opportunities for the forwards,” said G-Dub coach Erin Hartfield. “Defenders Montana Edgington, Dayna Derksen and Aubrey Lawlor were outstanding, keeping the ball out of our defensive end and not allowing Agassiz to set anything up.”

The Grizzlies barely had time to catch their breath before playing North Delta in the back half of a double header.

Spriggs led the attack with four goals in a 9-0 win. Lane had two with Campbell, Dueck and Grace Hertzog also finding the mark.

“Paige Hellam assisted on many of these goals and was a driving force on offence,” Hartfield noted.

The Grizzlies finished the tournament with a 5-0 win over Southridge, a speedy team that’s given them trouble in the past.

Goalie Mackenzie Mager was unbeatable for a third straight game.

Lane scored four and Spriggs added a single.

“This was a complete team effort,” Hartfield said. “The midfield and defense shut down every attack from the Southridge offense.

“On offense, passing and speed made the difference. The forwards were relentless and kept driving into the offensive zone.”

Provincials are Nov. 7-9 in Vancouver.
