No Logan Buchwitz = no problem for the GW Graham AA senior varsity football team, at least for one week.
With their star running back/linebacker sidelined with a hamstring injury, the Grizzlies still mustered 42 points in a 42-0 beatdown of the Frank Hurt Hornets, Saturday afternoon in Surrey.
The GWG ground game did most of the damage, led by shifty speedster Kaleb Spanner.
On his team’s first play from scrimmage, Spanner scampered down the left sideline for a 55 yard score. He added two more touchdowns and 148 yards on nine carries.
Brent Bilodeau made the most of three totes, generating 26 yards and a major.
Quarterback Grayson Frick had an efficient outing, completing nine passes for 201 yards and two TDs.
Liam Dallas and Josh McCallum caught the touchdown tosses and Jett Thomas led in receiving yards with 58 on three catches.
“We were looking for a quick start and challenged the players to be ready to go from the opening whistle,” said head coach Luke Acheson. “The coaches were very pleased with how the players responded.”
The defence generated three key turnovers.
Dallas produced an interception and Colby Bessette recovered a fumble.
Jackson Saunders blocked a kick.
Bessette, Dhillon Myers, Andrew Smith and Greg Roberts each had half a QB sack.
“Our team played well in all three phases of the game against the young, rebuilding but scrappy squad from Frank Hurt,” Acheson noted. “By the end of the first half it was clear that the young squad Frank Hurt was overwhelmed as we took a 42 to 0 lead into halftime.
“We agreed to run the time in the second half to avoid injury and a more lopsided outcome.”
G-Dub’s home opener is Friday night as they take on the Holy Cross (Surrey) Crusaders under the lights at Exhibition Stadium.
Kick off is 7 p.m.
