A group of athletes from the Surrey Gymnastics Society traveled to Prince George last weekend, and returned from the B.C. Championships with some impressive results.
The group of 15 won a total of four all around medals, and includes two provincial champions.
“In all, the SGS club had eight athletes place in the top eight all around,” said SGS competitive program director John Carroll. “This is a great accomplishment for any club.”
All four male athletes cracked the top five in their respective categories, and three own all around medals.
Treyson Cerrato, 11, was the all around champion in the Level 4 (under-13) group, adding gold medals on rings and high bar, a silver on floor and parallel bars, and a bronze on pommel horse. He also had the fifth-best score on vault.
In the Level 4 13-and-over group, Spencer Principe just missed winning a provincial championship. The 12 year-old was one-tenth of a point out of first place, placing second overall after winning gold on the pommel horse, a silver on rings and parallel bar and placing fifth on high bar.
Kevin Hignell, 14, was one place back of Principe and took the all around bronze medal. He won a silver medal on vault, won bronze on pommel horse and placed fourth on runs and tied his teammate for fifth on high bar.
Bronze medals on rings and parallel bars lifted Alon Zvikler to a fifth place finish all around in the Level 3 (under-13) group. Zvikler, 12, was also fourth on floor and pommel horse and fifth on high bar.
Alexa Cannon, 10, won all around gold in the Level 2 Tyro group to lead the SGS female gymnasts. Cannon won the gold medal on floor, silver on vault and bars and bronze on beam.
A silver medal on beam lifted Samantha Lal, 12, to seven all around in Level 2 Novice. Twin sisters Jillian and Jennifer Principe contested the Level 3 tyro group, with Jillian taking gold on beam to place ninth all around, and Jennifer earning a fifth-place score on beam.
Alanna Jones, 19, placed eighth all around in Level 5 open, with teammate Bridget Hastings, 16, in the 11th position. Emily Carroll, 15, cracked the top 10 in all four events to place eighth all around in Level 4 Open.
