Abbotsford’s Adam Hadwin charged into contention at the RBC Canadian Open on Friday, making a run at the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club course record along the way.
Playing just his third career PGA Tour event, the 23-year-old Robert Bateman Secondary grad shot a four-under 66 in the second round – two strokes off the course record at the Vancouver layout. The lone blemish on Hadwin’s round was a bogey on the 18th hole.
Hadwin is one of seven golfers tied for fifth at two under par for the tournament, two strokes back of co-leaders Chad Campbell and Michael Thompson. Paul Goydos and Lee Janzen are one stroke back of the leaders at three-under, while the group at two-under includes major champions Charl Schwartzel and Geoff Ogilvy, up-and-coming phenom Rickie Fowler, and fellow Canadian David Hearn along with Hadwin.
The round was extra-special for the second-year Canadian Tour pro because his younger brother Kyle, who has had five surgeries while battling Crohn’s disease, was able to walk the course. It was the first time since last year’s Canadian Open that Kyle was able to see Adam play in person.
“He’s a tough kid, he’s been battling hard for a while,” Hadwin told pgatour.com. “It’s great that he’s able to get out here and enjoy this with me.”
Fellow Abbotsford golfer Nick Taylor didn’t fare as well. He shot a four-over 74 on Friday to fall to five-over for the tournament and miss the cut by a single stroke. He carded three birdies, five bogies and a double-bogey on the 11th.
