Armstrong high jumper Trinity Hansma is on the move this summer.
The 16-year-old Pleasant Valley Secondary student placed sixth with a jump of 1.65 metres at the Canadian Senior/Junior Track and Field Championships in Ottawa last week. Hansma, who turns 17 in November, is the youngest member of the B.C. Junior Team (Under 20).
Coached by Ian Cameron of the Vernon AAA Athletics Club, Hansma will try and make the provincial team at the B.C. Athletics Jamboree in Coquitlam this weekend. That team will go to the Legion National Championships, Aug. 11-13, in Brandon. This team is actually for 16- and 17-year-olds.
Hansma has already been been named to Team B.C. for the Canada Summer Games, July 23-28 in Winnipeg. This team is for athletes 22 years and under.
While in Ottawa, Hansma, the Okanagan Valley high school record holder for both junior and senior high jump, met Derek Drouin, Canadian record holder in high jump, Olympic gold medallist and world champion.
Earlier, Hansma jumped 1.65 to win the high jump at the Jack Brow Meet at the Kelowna Apple Bowl.
The Vernon club was represented by 35 athletes and pocketed 48 medals and numerous personal bests.
Kian Zabihi, a thrower, won four medals with a meet record in the 12-year-old Boys hammer (30.88m) and shot put (11.49m).
Zach Loland was versatile, running, jumping and throwing his way to five medals. He struck silver in the Boys 13 high jump (1.40m), discus (17.73m) and javelin (24.87m). He bagged bronze in the 80 hurdles (15.51) and 200 hurdles (33.63).
Chris Loland won the Men’s 18-19 high jump at 1.95m and the javelin at 47.20m, while taking bronze in the long jump at 5.22m. Megan Loland was second in the Women’s 16-17 high jump at 1.50 and third in the 400 hurdles at 1:09.81.
Cameron Acob won the Boys 13 1,200 run in 4:21.30 and the shot put with a toss of 6.54 metres. Matthew Acob took the Boys 12 1,200 in 4:08.30 while earning silver in the 800 (2:36.49) and bronze in the 200 dash (29.76).
The Ariano sisters also sparkled with Annika grabbing gold in the Women’s 16-17 3,000 (10:37.97) and silver in the 1,500 (4:55.27). Natalya topped the 2,000 steeplechase in 8:34.55.
Bayise Gibson ruled the Girls 11 100 dash in 15.17 while producing silver in the 600 (1:58.57) and bronze in the shot put (7.06).
Carter Leahy garnered gold in the Boys 13 2,000 (6:54.37) and 80 hurdles (14.14) while his sister, Paige, posted bronze in the Girls 10 shot put (4.84).
Brooke Lawlor collected gold in the Girls 14-15 1,200 in 4:16.33, while Sarah Holman was second in the Women’s 16-17 high jump at 1.50m.
Morgan Mills ruled the Girls 14-15 high jump at 1.55, while Julianna Moore was golden in the Girls 13 1,200 (4:22.64) and snagged silver in the 2,000 in 7:49.93.
Stephen Moore struck gold in the Boys 14-15 1,200 in 3:45.44, while Nicholas Newman produced gold in the Boys 11 discus at 22.65 and Jack Screen topped the Boys 14-15 1,200 in 4:05.20 and Robyn Poulin took gold in the Women’s 35-39 800 (2:13.78).
Jaeda Ostoforoff pocketed bronze medals in the Women’s 16-17 100 hurdles, 200 dash and 100 dash, while Coby Therrien took home bronze in the Boys 10 javelin (15.78) and 60 dash (9.58).
Katelyn Barry was runner-up in the Girls 13 shot (7.57), while Victoria Barry was third in the Girls 13 100 dash (13.74). Christine Blyth was third in the Women’s 35-39 100 in 14.20, while adam Bugera was third in the Men’s 18-19 400 dash in 59.78/
