Exploding for 15 goals in two games, the Valley West Hawks swept a two-game series with the North Island Silvertips last weekend.
Valley West improved its BC Hockey Major Midget League record to 20-14-1-3 (win-loss-tie-overtime loss).
Due to injuries, the Hawks were unable to ice a full lineup in either game. Just 16 skaters dressed on Saturday’s 9-5 win in Campbell River, with just 14 available Sunday in Nanaimo for the 6-1 victory.
Still, the Hawks managed to pick up four points and remain in sixth place with two weeks to go in the regular season.
For 40 minutes Saturday, the Silvertips matched the offensive production of Valley West. The two sides were tied 2-2 after one period, and the Hawks led 6-5 late in the second period.
Valley West added to its lead one second before the second intermission, then added two unanswered goals in the third period.
Brayden Wick tallied three goals and added an assist for Valley West, with Bryce Anderson and Josh Pederson adding two goals each. Alek Sukunda and Tyler Ho also scored for the Hawks, with Aidan Barfoot contributing with three assists.
After a scoreless opening period to Sunday’s game, the Hawks struck for three goals in the second period and three more in the third. Wick and Trevor Isaksson each scored a pair of goals, with Barfoot and Calder Newson notching one each. Ho assisted on three goals.
The Hawks have a bye next weekend, before closing out the regular season with two games against the Vancouver Northeast Chiefs March 4-5.
