A rainy weekend on the road wasn’t enough to dampen the effort of the UBC Okanagan Heat women who swept a pair of matches in PACWEST soccer action.
On Saturday in Nanaimo, the Heat endured the deluge of water with a 4-0 win over the Vancouver Island Mariners.
“We played well today all across the park,” said Heat coach Claire Paterson. “The team really came together to capture the 4-0 win.”
After Madeleine Greig’s strike made it 1-0 in the first half, Kirsten Dodds, freshman Haylee Lakovic and Taylor Sarchet scored second-half goals to put the game away.
Fourth-year keeper Christine Tallon snagged her third clean-sheet of the season, all of which have been on the road.
On Sunday in a wet North Vancouver, Dodds came off the bench to score both goals as the Heat downed the Capilano Blues 2-0.
“(Doods) came off the bench in the second half and instantly made an impact by running at players,” Paterson said of Dodds who netted her first point at the 57th minute, and then sneaked in a last-minute effort at the 89th minute.
Tallon earned her fourth clean sheet of the season.
The Heat (5-2-1) will hit the road for the last time this season to play the Thompson Rivers WolfPack at Hillside Stadium in Kamloops this Saturday, Oct. 5. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
Heat men
The UBC Okanagan men managed just a point in two PACWEST road games over the weekend.
On Saturday in Nanaimo, the Heat played to a 1-1 draw with VIU Mariners.
After falling behind just two minutes in, Austin Jones drew the Heat even at the 25-minute mark.
Despite losing third-year forward Nicolas Kmet to a second yellow-card, the Heat hung on in the second half to earn the tie.
On Sunday, under heavy rain, in North Vancouver, Capilano downed the Heat 4-1.
Despite the final result, Heat coach Dante Zanatta was proud of the way his squad came out and fought, particularly in the tougher conditions due to a relentless rainstorm.
UBCO’s goal came from Austin Jones, his second of the weekend and fifth of the season.
“It was just one of those games,” Zanatta said. “They got the four and we didn’t. All in all, not the result we wanted, but now it’s time to regroup and get ready for the rivalry next weekend.”
At 4-2-2, the Heat are still in a playoff position. This Saturdsay, UBCO travels to Kamloops to play the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack.
