On Tuesday, June 10, the Hershey’s Track and Field Games comes to Campbell River, hosted by the Campbell River Comets Track and Field Club.
This event is part of an advancement to a larger Hershey’s Track and Field North American Championship event held annually across North America.
All boys and girls aged 9 to 14 will have the opportunity to compete in a general Run, Jump, and Throw track meet with the emphasis on participation in the sport. This is a modified track meet which takes the sport of track and field back to its original roots of running, jumping, and throwing events.
Winners in the Campbell River meet will be considered for advancement to the provincial meet to be held later in June. Winners in that meet will be entered into a regional pool and become eligible for selection to a Regional Team which will travel to Hershey, Pennsylvania, to compete in the North American Final, held Saturday, August 2.
Events for the local meet will include the 100 meter dash, 600 meter run, 1000 meter run, 1200 meter run, Standing long jump, and Softball Throw. Participants will choose two running events and a field event or two field events and a running event.
Registration is FREE and there will be (Hershey’s) prizes and ribbons awarded. Registration forms are available at the Sportsplex and at Strathcona Gardens. A concession will also be available for your convenience. The meet gets underway at 4 p.m. and runs to 8:30 p.m. at the track at Phoenix Middle School.
