A Nanaimo teen has some major swim meets coming up this summer and will have some help getting there.

Tayden De Pol, 16, of the Nanaimo Riptides swim team, was selected as funding recipient this year through the Nanaimo Sport Achievement Awards’ Athlete Assistance Program.

This spring he competed at the Canadian Swimming Trials in Toronto and then medalled at the Western Canadian championships in Edmonton. In July he will compete at junior nationals in Calgary and in August it’s on to senior nationals in Winnipeg.

“My training’s gone on to a different level, so I’ll do well, I think,” De Pol said. “I’m feeling good right now.”

Nanaimo Sport Achievement Awards chairwoman Marilyn Sullivan presented De Pol with a cheque for $1,500 last month at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre. Motocross racer Joey Parkes was also supported this year through the Athlete Assistance Program.

The Athlete Assistance Program funding benefits local high-calibre athletes and is possible through the support of Nanaimo Sport Achievement Awards sponsors and by proceeds from the annual awards gala at the Coast Bastion Hotel.
