The Mount Douglas Rams outlasted the Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers for 39-33 in the B.C. High School Football semifinal on Saturday and are making a third straight trip to the AAA Subway Bowl championship.
The Rams have won it the last two years and are looking to etch their names into high school history. They’ll face the Terry Fox Ravens at 7 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 30) in Vancouver’s B.C. Place.
Marcus Davis was the deciding factor against the Panthers as he scored five of the Rams’ six touchdowns. That the Rams relied on him as much as they did said a lot about the Panthers and, just how much deeper the AAA Eastern Conference is compared to the Western Conference. TheEast’s top three teams, Terry Fox, Lord Tweedsmuir and W.J. Mouat, were in the AAA final four with the Rams.
Terry Fox beat Mouat 17-6 in the other semi.
Davis rushed for 240 yards and two TD’s on 17 carries, his most carries this season. He also caught seven receptions for 168 yards and two TD’s, and made ran back an interception 73 yards for a TD. Running back Julian Luis scored the other major for the Rams.
Quarterback Ashton MacKinnon connected on 13 of 18 pass attempts for 288 yards, including the two Davis TD receptions. Gavin Cobb caught two receptions for a massive 93 yards.
Davis’ efforts didn’t end there as he contributed on defence too, sacking the Panthers’ quarterback and also making a fumble recovery.
Byron MacKinnon led the Rams’ defence with nine tackles and a sack. James Nicholas blocked a punt (which was recovered by Rams’ Jonah Merino), made two sacks and seven tackles while the twin towers of Christian Krause and Zach Wilkinson combined for 12 tackles. Sean Waugh also made an interception and Wilkinson also blocked a conversion attempt.
The junior Rams’ great season came to an end on Thursday against the junior Ravens (an interesting prequel to the senior Subway Bowl) as the Ravens won 21-16.
