Many of Nanaimo’s high school basketball teams are off to the kind of start they wanted.
Some teams are developing winning ways early this season.
The Nanaimo District Islanders senior AAA boys are a team to watch. The Isles beat the Ballenas Whalers 60-38 on Tuesday at the Nanaimo District Secondary School gym.
“We played really well, actually,” said Will Fridriksson, Islanders guard. “We ran our stuff well and played good defensively, enough to win this game.”
The Isles are a step above the rest of the city’s best so far with convincing wins earlier this month against the Wellington Wildcats and Dover Bay Dolphins.
“We’ve been doing really well against some good teams, so I’m excited to see what we can do,” Fridriksson said.
Winston Gardiner was ND’s top scorer Tuesday with 15 points and Ben Whiting added 11.
The Nanaimo District senior girls won their half of the doubleheader, beating the Carihi Tyees.
A few blocks away, the Wildcats senior boys beat the Barsby Bulldogs 96-40. Scoring stats weren’t kept.
Also Tuesday, Wellington’s senior girls came up with a 76-29 home-court victory against the Highland Raiders. Shaylie Jobbagy led the ’Cats with 19 points and Hassy Fashina-Bombata scored 16.
