Dover Bay was tough to beat on the wrestling mats.
The team’s small contingent managed a second-place finish at Island championships last month in Esquimalt.
Ian Tuck won gold in dominant fashion in his 70-kilogram class as he did not have one point scored against him all tournament.
“He is a powerful wrestler with a lot of skill and there are few that can stop Ian when he puts his heart into it,” said Darren Colyn, a Dover coach, in a press release.
Steven Guo took second at Islands and went on to also earn a silver medal two weeks later at provincials in Salmon Arm.
Erik Hovey also earned silver at Islands. Samuel Colyn and Ezra Colyn were Dover’s other contributors.
Also, the program’s head coach Andrew Tuck was honoured at Islands with the Ed Ashmore Award for Excellence. Andrew has been at the helm of the Nanaimo Wrestling Club for a decade.
“Andrew Tuck is the man responsible for bringing wrestling back to Nanaimo and for making the program what it is today,” said coach Tom McEvay at the award presentation.
