The 100 Mile Nordics cross-country ski club’s Challenge 500 was a big hit last year, so the executive has decided to do it again.

It’s a fun contest that sets a goal for skiers to log either 300 or 500 kilometres on the 99 Mile Trails, as individuals, pairs or families.

People can register at the 99 Mile Ski Lodge and it costs $25 to get skiers into the running for many great prizes.

Participants log their kilometres each time they go out for a ski, and at the end of the season, everyone who has recorded 500 km has his or her name put into a hat for a draw for the $500 cash grand prize. There will also be random prize draws made throughout the season at Nordic special events.

Club member Deb Summers is co-ordinating the Challenge this year and she says the intent is to get people out skiing and make it fun. If 500 km seems too ominous, shoot for 300 km as a more reasonable goal, she adds.

Logging kilometres as a family can add up fast, she notes, as each participant gets to contribute their personal distance skied for a group total.

Last year, 23 out 36 Challenge 500 registrants met or surpassed his or her goal.

People will need to purchase a season ski trail pass or pay day-use fees to participate.
