G.P. Vanier basketball player Chase Hobenshield has been selected to the Under 15 Provincial team that will compete at various tournaments throughout July this summer.
He joins two talented young ladies from Isfeld who also are representing the Valley on their respective Provincial basketball teams (U15 and U16).
“All three are testament to the quality of athletes our Valley keeps producing year after in year in a variety of sports,” said Vanier basketball coach Larry Street. “Of course, basketball is the name of the game for Chase, who says being on the Provincial team is “one of the best things ever to happen to me.”
Hobenshield notes it will be a busy summer. “Other than some exhibitions and scrimmages against Lower Mainland club programs, and other Provincial teams, we will be travelling to tournaments in Bellevue (Seattle), Washington; Lynden, Washington; and Las Vegas, Nevada. There may be a chance to go to a Canadian tournament back east at the end of July.”
Hobenshield said it’s a great time to meet new friends. “I enjoy everyone on the team, and there are players from all over our Province.”
Hobenshield notes there are so many very talented and skilled players at this level. “I’m also playing more bigger players. (Note: Hobenshield, as a 14 year old, is 6′,7″, 245 pounds and has size 18 feet). My skill level is improving, but I need lots of work still in handling the basketball.”
The young hoopster has set his goals for the summer: “To gain more experience by playing much more basketball; to meet new people and attain different friends; and to learn from other good coaches.” Hobenshield says much of what he has achieved so far is made possible by his parents, “whom I owe so much to.”
“Chase Hobenshield has a tremendous future ahead of him, and with continued hard work he will be a force to reckon with,” Street said. “Our program at G.P. Vanier looks forward to nurturing Chase to help him achieve his goals, and we know he looks forward to doing whatever it takes to help make his teammates better, because he is a wonderful team player, with a positive attitude that will be infectious around his friends on the court.”
