HOCKEY: North Delta beats South Delta for Bantam tournament win

Team went undefeated in seven games to earn gold in Richmond

North Delta’s Bantam A2 team went undefeated in winning the Richmond International Bantam/Midget Hockey Tournament on Monday (Dec. 31).

In an all-Delta final, the team of 13- and 14-year-olds beat South Delta 4-1 in the gold-medal final at Richmond Ice Centre.

The Sundemons won three games and tied one to claim top seed in the opening round of the tournament, which included nine teams in the Bantam Tier 3 division.

In the playoff round, North Delta topped Richmond by a score of 3-2 in the quarterfinal and Surrey, 5-3, in the semifinal to reach Monday morning’s championship game.

Players on the Frank Centanni-coached team are Jonas Ponce, Aiden Benza, Sam Centanni, Jadon Nager, Matthew Morettin, Owen Nielson, Jacob Dueck, Peter Dueck, Spencer Ball, Daniel Jerrett, Aki Prefontaine, Peyton Sami, Brad Zhou, Matt Russell, Riley Ward, Matias Reid and Jacob Zillich. Assistant coaches are Rob Reid, Don Sami, John Russell and Lorne Nielson.

In the Bantam Tier 2 division, North Delta’s A1 team lost in the tournament semifinal game Sunday in a shootout with Portland Jr. Winterhawks.
